"Every Saturday 'Rap Attack,' Mr. Magic, Marley Marl ..."

mannn seriously another death...WTF.....sorry that the last three post have been about someone passing but, i just heard mr.magic went home today. mr.magic was my east coast informant, i was always checking for his dope compilations in the 80's . my condolences to his friends and family.......
this is from dj premier's blog ....check it blessings max

Message from DJ Premier:

I want to send out the utmost respect and condolences to the memory of John Rivas — aka Mr. Magic.

He passed away this morning of a heart attack.

True hip hop heads know that his history is so long due to him being the first rap mixshow to ever be on commercial radio on New York’s WBLS (107.5) with Marley Marl and Fly Ty in 1982-1984. Then went on to to WHBI in October 1984 and then back to WBLS in 1985 and WDAS in Philly. Simultaneously he paved the way for all radio stations that ever did mixshows and also sparked the career of Boogie Down Productions due to the ids he showed when they came to shop their demo to him and was turned away which then sparked “South Bronx” and “The Bridge Is Over”. He was known for his direct and sarcastic attitude on the air and every artist wanted his approval when it came to breaking new records. He even had songs dedicated to him by the legendary Whodini (”Mr. Magic’s Wand”) which was surprisingly produced by one of my favorite artists, Thomas Dolby.

Shouts out to Marley Marl & Fly Ty for the correct information on this. Rest in Peace Mr. Magic. -DJ Premier

GrandMaster Roc Raida R.I.P.

another sad day, roc raida has passed. not only was he a pioneer of turntablism he was a very nice and approachable person. i am very thankful that i was able to see him perform on several occasions. he will be missed......max
this is probably one of his last performances enjoy..

GrandMaster Roc Raida
Roc Raida began his DJ career in the early eighties at the age of ten. Surrounded by such inspirations as his father, a member of the Sugar Hill Records act Mean Machine and hip hop impresario Grandmaster Flash, Raida cultivated his interest into an absolute passion. Now, Roc Raida is considered among the best of the contemporary DJ’s and has brought the art of Turntablism and Party rocking to a fresh new level.

In the late eighties Raida gained prominence as a member of the New York-based crew the X-Men who, for obvious of copyright reasons, later became known as the X-Ecutioners. Champions of furthering the turntablist movement, the X-Ecutioners made their reputation by utilizing the techniques of beat-juggling; the manual alteration between individual kick and snare sounds to create original drum patterns in real time. This practice has been an inspiration and a force in Roc Raida’s style.

In the beginning defeat was commonplace, as battles were mainly popularity contests. The more contests he entered the more the competition began to appreciate his style and determination. Pushing his limits and raising the standard with which DMC’s are judged, Raida began to get noticed. His impressive finishes in some of the premier DJ battles; first place in the 1991 "As One"; second place in the "Superman Battle"; and second place in the 1992 DMC US Finals were just the beginning. In 1995 Raida, was crowned the DMC World Champion in front of a massive London audience.

The past several years have seen Raida traveling around the globe in such exotic locations as Singapore, Turkey, Japan and Australia to China, Hawaii, Moscow, and the South of France. Two years ago on a panel at the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Raida was appointed "Grandmaster", by some of Hip-Hop’s founding fathers. Rules for this dubious honor state that one may only be bestowed with the approval of another Grandmaster; Raida was not only approved, but also welcomed by Kool Herc, Grand Wizard Theodore and scratch evolutionist DST. To round out a phenomenal decade, Raida was also inducted into the DMC Hall of Fame at the 1999 DMC World Finals in New York City.

Roc Raida has been featured on an episode of "Saturday Night Live"; the first DJ to ever share the stage with the fabled SNL band. Proving, once again, that Raida is the perfect example of a master perfecting his art.

Raida has taken his DJ style to souring heights and has also moved into production in the last 8 years. He has produced record for artists, such as, Big L, Smif ‘N’ Wessun, Fat Joe, Bad Boy recording artist Aasim, Ghostface, Black Thought of The Roots and Linkin Park to name a few. He has also lent his hand’s scratching on records for artist’s like O.C.’s classic “Time’s Up” to pop sensation Pink’s new album “I’m Not Dead.” Recently Raida was the star of the National Pepsi commercial entitled Speakerboxx. From Raida’s experience’s and touring attributes he has released 3 DVD’s documenting The Adventures of Roc Raida and now created The Gong Battle (New York & London), which has brought a new light on the turntabilism world of battles.

With many more projects to come in the near future and now a part of the Heavy Hitters crew you will be hearing and seeing a lot of Raida for many years to come through his music, his visuals, his style and the radio where he is the newest edition to Washington D.C.’s 1 radio station WPGC 95.5. Stay tuned because The Adventures of Roc Raida are always going and going and going…

THE MICROPHONE MASTERS MID 80'S LOS ANGELES HIPHOP

AS A COLLECTOR OF HIPHOP MUSIC, I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN FASCINATED WITH EARLY RECORDINGS OF AN ARTIST OR GROUPS, BACK IN 1997 I MET AN M.C./GRAFITTI ARTIST BY THE NAME OF MARK7 FROM LOS ANGELES, HE WAS RECORDING A PROJECT AT THE STUDIO I WAS WORKING AT. MARK7 AND I HAD THE SAME VISION AS INDEPENDENT RECORDING ARTIST, SO WE DECIDED TO CO-LAB ON A 12 INCH RECORD TOGETHER. HE HAD A FRIEND NAMED URG7 WHO HAD JUST PUT OUT A RECORD AND KNEW HOW TO SAVE A LITTLE MONEY , SO WE ALL MET IN HOLLYWOOD TO CONNECT, WEEKS LATER WE RELEASED THE CO-LAB SERIES #1..LONG STORY SHORT, URG7 AND I DEVELOPED A FRIENDSHIP AND HE INTRODUCED ME TO HIS CREW THE UNDAGROUND ASIATICS LEAD BY D.J. KALLY BOOM SHABAZZ. YEARS PASS AND URG7 MENTIONS A 12 INCH FROM 1987 THAT CAME OUT, FROM HIS OLD GROUP HIM AND SHABAZZ WERE IN CALLED THE MICROMASTERS. SO NOW I'M ON THE HUNT FOR THAT A RECORD, IN ABOUT A WEEK OR SO I FOUND THAT RECORD. MONTHS PASS AND ONE DAY, URG AND I ARE CHIILIN' AND I ASK HIM ABOUT THE MICROPHONE MASTERS AND HE TELLS ME HIS MEMORIES OF THE GROUP. HE ALSO TELLS ME HE MAY HAVE SOME OLD CASSETTES OF THEIR EARLY RECORDINGS. THIS IS WHAT WE WERE ABLE TO ARCHIVE GET READY FOR A LESSON IN MID 80'S LOS ANGELES HIPHOP .........MAX

ONCE UPON A TIME IN COMPTON,THERE WERE A CREW OF HIPHOP HEADS CALLED THE SCRATCH PATROL,FEATURING THE OOM BROTHA'S,KID BOOM,DR.DOOM & DEE JAY ZOOM,THEY RAN INTO A KIDD WHO CALLED HIMSELF PRINCE & THE REST IS
HISTORY,THE MICROPHONE MASTERS AS A CREW CONSISTED OF 3 MAIN MEMBER'S DOCTOR DOOM, KID BOOM, EGYPTIAN PRINCE,WE USE TO GET TOGETHER WEEKLY & DO A TAPE,JUST BASICALLY RECORD SONGS STRAIGHT TO A CASSETTE DECK,NO PUNCH IN'S OR RE-TAKES WHAT WE DID IS WHAT U GOT,ANYWAY K.B.(KID BOOM) USE TO SELL THE TAPES AT OUR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL AND WE WOULD MAKE CLOSE TO $80 TO $100 DOLLARS A WEEK.WE WERE ONE OF THE MOST SERIOUS UNDERGROUND CREW'S IN COMPTON,AND OFTEN DRAWING DJ'S,RAPPER'S & PRODUCER'S FROM OTHER CREW'S THAT WANTED TO BE DOWN WITH THE SOUND.

KID BOOM & EGYPTIAN PRINCE HOOKED UP IN JR.HIGH AT WILLOWBROOK IN COMPTON,THEY ALSO LATER ATTENDED CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL IN COMPTON WHERE THEY MET THE 3RD MALE RAPPER TO EVENTUALLY JOIN THE CREW,RAP-O-MATIC,KID BOOM & DR.DOOM KNEW EACH OTHER FROM THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD,THE CREW WOULD SPEND THE NEXT SEVERAL YEARS RECORDING IN COMPTON ON 132 ND ST AT KID BOOM'S PAD. TALENT SHOWS, AND TAPE AFTER TAPE THEY GOT BETTER AS A UNIT,THE CREW SOON CHANGED WHEN DUE TO FAMILY ISSUES RAP-O-MATIC HAD TO LEAVE THE GROUP,THE CREW SOON REPLACED HIM, WITH WHAT SOME CALLED A BOLD MOVE,A FEMALE M.C. ,RAPPIN REE'CEE,NOW THE CREW WAS MADE UP OF 3 MALES & A FEMALE,KID BOOM,DR.DOOM,THE EGYPTIAN PRINCE & RAPPIN REE'CEE BECAME THE MICROPHONE MASTERS.
THE GROUP STAYED IN THE STUDIO MAKING MUSIC & RECORDING,CAME UP WITH A COUPLE OF HOTT SONGS ,TOO COLD CHILLIN WHICH AT THE TIME WE RAPPED OVER AN ICE-T INSTRUMENTAL "COLD WIND MADNESS", & FRANCINE, A FEMALE INSPIRED SONG THAT WAS INSPIRED BY THIS FEMALE K.B. MET AT GRADNITE NAMED MAXINE,THESE TWO SONGS CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF A INDY HOLLYWOOD BASED LABEL CALLED "ECLIPSE RECORDS" THEY LIKED WHAT THEY HEARD ON THE DEMO TAPE AND WANTED TO TRY AND PUT TOGETHER A SITUATION,WE SIGNED CONTRACT'S & STARTED WORKING ON THE 1ST RECORD,1 YEAR AFTER GRADUATION
WE WERE ALL THRILLED,WE WERE PLACED TO WORK WITH TWO PRODUCERS WHO WERE BROTHERS KNOWN AS THE "FOWLER BROTHERS" ORIGINALLY K.B. DID ALL HIS BEATS ON A DR. RHYTHM OR A ROLAND 808 AND I REMEMBER BEING IN THE STUDIO & THE PRODUCER WOULD TELL US THE BASS WAS DISTORTED,BUT WE WOULD LAUGH BECAUSE WE WANTED IT TO SOUND THAT WAY,OVER THE COURSE OF A MONTH OR TWO THE RECORDS WERE DONE, SIDE A TOO COLD CHILLIN AND SIDE B-FRANCINE, & THE GROUP WAS ON THE ROAD TO GO & DO THE 1989 URBAN MUSIC AWARDS IN CLEVELAND OHIO,WITH NAMES SUCH AS...U.T.F.O L.A. DREAM TEAM,LEVERT,S.O.S. BAND & OTHERS ,THIS WAS A FUN TIME & A HUGE LEARNING EXPERIENCE,THE SINGLE DID WELL,ALTHOUGH THERE WAS A SLIGHT PROBLEM WIT "FRANCINE" IT SEEM'S SOME OF THE RADIO DEE-JAY'S THOUGHT THEY HEARD PROFANITY ON THE RECORD SO OF COURSE KID BOOM WENT BACK IN THE STUDIO & MADE SURE THE SCRATCHES SOUNDED LIKE WHAT IT WAS REALLY SAYING,"ALL STUCK UP" & NOT( ALL FUCKED UP). RAPPIN REE'CEE BROUGHT A DIFFERENT DYNAMIC TO THE CREW,WITH HER COMMANDING VOICE,POTENT LYRIC'S & PUNCHLINES & THE FAMOUS ROLL OF HER TONGUE,A LOT OF PEOPLE LOVED THE FORMULA WE CREATED TOGETHER,THE RECORDINGS COLLECTED HERE ARE THE MOST RAW & UN-CUT VERSIONS OF PREVIOUSLY UN-RELEASED MATERIAL THAT WERE SOME OF THE FINAL COLLECTIVE EFFORT'S OF THE GROUP,WHO'S FAN BASE STRETCHES FROM,SWITZERLAND TO BOSTON TO JAPAN,THE MICROPHONE MASTERS CREW,& AFTER ALL THESE YEARS THEY STILL KEEP IN TOUCH. THANKS TO THE FANS ALL OVER THE WORLD WHO BELIEVED & SUPPORTED US.

B-SIDE TO VOL.1 BLACKALICIOUS

ON A RAINY DAY REMIX.....

ENJOY ......MAX

http://www.megaupload.com/?f=D4VUIE4T

CLEANIN' OUT MY CLOSET.....CONGRATS MARSHALL..

EVERYONE KNOWS HIS ALBUMS OUT TODAY,BUT NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT THIS EXCLUSIVE "BREAKROOM REMIX".....(HERE'S A LITTLE STORY THAT MUST BE TOLD).......OK THE YEAR IS 1997 I'M INVITED TO RAP SHEET CONVENTION

WITH MY FRIEND KANETIC SOURCE, WHO I WAS ALSO D.J.ING AND PRODUCING (THAT'S ANOTHER STORY I'LL TELL LATER). I WAS FEELING GOOD BECAUSE I WAS SELLING MY NEW COMPILATION, "TURNTABLES DIARIES VOL.1" CASSETTE AND KANETIC AND I HAD A 12 INCH
Photobucket , WHICH I PRODUCED THE B-SIDE. THIS WAS THE RAP OLYMPICS BATTLE NIGHT. SO I KNEW IT WAS GONNA BE DOPE...
SO I'M IN THE SPOT SELLING AND GIVING AWAY TAPES AND VINYL, NETWORKING ETC...I RUN IN TO THIS DUDE (MARC KEMPH) THAT IS MANAGING THIS ARTIST AND HAS SOME SORT OF MAGAZINE BACK EAST SOMEWHERE..SO MY NETWORKING TACTICS ARE ALWAYS THE SAME "IF YOU LIKE IT ,U LIKE IT ,IF YOU DONT ,U DONT" BUT AT LEAST YOU KNOW ABOUT IT, BUT PLEASE LET KNOW WHAT YOU THINK GOOD OR BAD.
WE EXCHANGE INFO AND IM OFF TO GRIND...A FEW MINUTES LATER I APPROACH THIS KID SITTING UP AGAINST THE WALL TO SEE IF HE'S INTRUSTED IN BUYING SOME HIPHOP MUSIC...HE SAID I'M BROKE AND I SAID ME TOO...HE OFFERS TO TRADE ME FOR ONE OF HIS TAPES SO WE DO. I'M LIKE "I JUST GOT THIS TAPE FROM YOUR MANAGER". BUT IM A HIPHOP COLLECTOR SO I KEEP AND TAKE EVERYTHING GOOD OR WACK. ITS LIKE HAVING 2 OF THE SAME RECORDS....HE ASKED IF I WAS FROM CALI AND I SAID YES , HE WAS FROM DETROIT. WE GIVE POUNDS AND IM OUT......THE REST IS HISTORY .THAT WAS A GREAT HIPHOP NIGHT....AND ONE OF MY FONDEST MEMORIES OF HIPHOP...NOT BECAUSE OF EMINEM, BECAUSE THAT NIGHT I SAW GREATS LIKE (M.C. EIHT, KING-TEE, J.U.I.C.E.,ACEYALONE) BUT I MUST SAY EMINEM WAS INCREDIBLE ..I HATE TO SAY HE REALLY BEAT OTHER-WISE BUT HE DID.........................................M.A.X. P.S. WE ROCKED HIS CASSETTE ALL THE WAY BACK TO SAN BERNARDINO A FEW TIMES, IT WAS DOPE AS FUCK EXCELLENT WORD PLAY....EVERYONE WHO HEARD THAT TAPE WAS BEGGING FOR A DUBB COPY, MARC KEMPH ALSO CALLED ME AND SAID HE WAS GONNA FEAT. MY TAPE IN HIS MAG TOO BUT I NEVER HEARD ANYTHING.

THIS IS FROM A SERIES OF REMIXES I DID A LONG TIME AGO ..ENJOY
